Kate Hudson’s early life in Hollywood

Screen siren: Kate Hudson recreates Hollywood glamour for The Edit in an interview.

SHE may have been brought up by Hollywood royalty, but Kate Hudson says she avoided the spoiled brat route because she had to pay her own way.

As a youngster the 38-year-old actress was cocooned from Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s glittering lifestyle, meaning that when it came to their lavish parties, she had no idea how famous their friends were.

The Almost Famous star said her mother Goldie told her straight that she wouldn’t be supported, adding: ‘They made it clear that we grew up privileged, and that it was theirs, not ours.’

Hudson told The Edit: ‘I won’t name-drop, but just think of all the movies they were in, from Shampoo to Tequila Sunrise.

‘Everyone came through here. We’re a very open-door family. All I’ll say is, when you’re little, you don’t realise. But now I’m like, “Wow, that’s an impressive guest list”.’ Goldie, 71, and 66-year-old Russell have never married. They met in 1983, a year after the Private Benjamin star’s divorce from Kate’s dad, musician Bill Hudson.

Hudson said she also had to learn about love for herself. With a 2007 divorce from The Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson, 50, after seven years’ marriage, she said: ‘My 20s were like a fast-track into adulthood. Things calmed down in my 30s… a bit!’

After another lengthy romance with Muse singer Matt Bellamy, 39, which ended in 2014, the mum-of-two admits she will always be a sucker for a rock star. ‘I write music, I sing,’ she said. ‘So with the people I’m attracted to, there’s often a musical element.’

Hudson now dates rocker Danny Fujikawa, from US band Chief, after they met hiking. ‘I was like, “Oh… what an amazing…”’ she laughed, fanning herself.
