A Grade I Area Court, Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 23-year-old man, Sanusi Mohammed, to six months imprisonment for escaping from police custody and breaking a police officer’s jaw.
The Judge, Inuwa Maiwada, gave the verdict after the convict had pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him.
Maiwada did not give the convict an option of fine. Rather, he warned him to desist from committing crimes.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that on Nov. 23, a case of housebreaking and theft was reported against the convict and promptly investigated.
“In the course of the investigation, the convict deliberately escaped from police custody and in the process of running away from detention, he was sighted by one Sadiq Abubakar, a police constable.
“However, the police officer raised the alarm to ensure the re-arrest of the convict. But in the process, he (the convict) attacked the officer.
“The convict inflicted serious injury on the police officer to the extent of breaking his jaw after which he was rushed to the hospital, where he is still receiving medical treatment.
“An estimated bill of N200,000 has so far been spent on the treatment of the police officer,” Adeyanju said
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 172, 267 and 252 of the Penal Code Law.
